3D printing custom smart cup holder and mobile phone holder for cars

Modern people's reliance on smartphones is well known. Not only can they make calls, shopping, socializing, but also navigation, so many people install a simple mobile phone holder in their car to use the navigation function of the mobile phone. However, for some high-value antique cars, it is quite difficult to add these additional products, because not only its utility, but also the beauty and texture of the car.

Recently, Redstack, a software, technology and hardware distributor in Australia, tried to customize the mobile phone holder and cup holder for a classic Mustang sedan in the 1960s with 3D printing technology . They combined the two into one, and designed a 3D printing device that integrates the cup holder and the mobile phone holder with the ash tank of the Mustang sedan as the installation point.

For their solution, the owner gave a strict standard. First of all, it must have utility, and secondly it must be perfectly matched with the interior of the car, and it should not be incompatible. Finally, it must be easy to disassemble in case the car is used for display in the future.

Redstack's designers used Autodesk Inventor, a design software from Autodesk, to design and quickly prototype and modify prototypes. Because each iteration is part of the entire design chain, it can be restored to the original design state with one click if needed.

In the design phase, they used the Ultimaker 2 3D printer and prototyped with PLA material to quickly test each design iteration. Once the final design is finalized, high quality ABS material is printed to ensure durability.

The end result is very satisfying, not only perfectly inserted into the ashtray in the car, firm and stable. It is also very easy to disassemble and can guarantee that the car will not affect the original appearance at any time.
